Where To Stay In Tel Aviv: What To Expect for TLV Hostels

Alice in Wonderland Hostel Tel Aviv Israel

Because I’ve stayed at Israel hostels, and worked at a Tel Aviv hostel, I’ve experienced the expectations of guests faced with reality. Hostels are really fun and amazing places to stay in TLV – the culture is very friendly and social!

However, you need to be aware of a few things before deciding to save some bucks on a hostel if it’s really not for you. These include:

  • If you’re a solo female traveler, hostels are safe – but I definitely advise keeping your guard up in general!
  • For anyone (especially couples) without much hostel experience, know that hostels are not hotels. E.g., if you have a suitcase, you get to carry it up the stairs. If there’s a roach, you don’t get to be mad at the receptionist. You also can’t expect complete silence at night. You’ll need to be prepared to rough it a bit.
  • If you don’t want to share a room, check to see if there are private rooms available. They cost extra, but may be worth it!
  • Most hostels have age requirements, so check first. If you don’t meet them, you still might be able to book a private room.

Important Tips For Staying at Hotels & Hostels In TLV

๐Ÿ‘‰ Always bring your passport and entry card (that you’ll get at the airport) to hotels and hostels in Tel Aviv! Otherwise, you’ll be charged the VAT tax.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Breakfast at hotels usually includes some foods you’re used to, but Israeli breakfast is better (and includes vegetables)! Be ready to try new foods that you’re going to love.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Tel Aviv is one of the most expensive cities in the world, so be sure to have some room in your budget!

More Ways To Find Tel Aviv Accommodation (including Free+Cheap Options)

Where to stay in Tel Aviv? This city has it all!

If you’re on an extreme budget, or want a different kind of accommodation, good news – Tel Aviv is the place for you!

Option 1: Facebook. In Tel Aviv, everyone uses good ol’ Facebook to rent out their apartments when they leave on vacation! Search for groups and you’ll be able to find options.

Option 2: Volunteer at a hostel! You’ll get free room and board, and sometimes food, too! Read more in this post: Working In A Hostel: Everything You Need To Know In.

Option 3: For more hostel options, I use Hostelworld, a search engine to find hostels.

Option 4: For apartment and house rentals that you’ll have all to yourself, check out VRBO – Like Airbnb, you can find places to stay that aren’t hotels.

Option 5: Trusted Housesitters – If you’re not allergic to animals (like I am), you can sign up for this. There’s a yearly fee, but you get housesits and you can stay free while caring for people’s pets!

Option 6: Couchsurfing – Where to find places you can stay on people’s couches and save a lot of money.

๐Ÿ‘‰ If you rent a car, be prepared for driving in Tel Aviv (you’ll need to be an aggressive driver!) To rent a car in Israel, Discover Cars is a great tool to use to find the best deals.

๐Ÿš– For car service download Gett, which helps you find taxis and keeps you from getting overcharged!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Use apps Moovit for public transportation, & Waze for driving directions.

๐Ÿ‘‰ For all over Israel, get a Rav Kav, the public transit card. You can fill up at stations and stores around the city. If you donโ€™t get one and fill it up outside of the bus, youโ€™ll have to buy one for one ride on the bus, and itโ€™s more expensive – so be sure to pick one up at the airport!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Trains: There are a few major train stations, so if youโ€™re going from one end of TLV to the other, this might be helpful if youโ€™re near the train station. Also other cities (like Haifa) aren’t far to ride the train for a day trip!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Walking is a great option in Tel Aviv, and you can rent bikes and scooters from various places around the city (you’ll see lots of people on electric bikes & scooters)!

What youโ€™ll need for trips in Tel Aviv & the Middle East

Tel Aviv is the best city to stay in for fun at the beach!

To prepare for a trip to Israel and the Middle East, the first thing to know is what time of year you’re going and to be ready for the weather. Here are my top things to get before a visit to Israel/Tel Aviv:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Travel Insurance, of course is always a necessity, in my opinon! Here are my top 2 options:

  • Allianz (This is what I use through my AAA membership)
  • Safety Wing

๐Ÿ‘‰ SIM Card. You can get physical ones at the airport, or an eSIM (which, if you have a new phone is a must):

Airalo eSIM is the worldโ€™s first eSIM store, already used by over 1 million travelers. With Airalo, you can download and install a digital data pack for over 200 countries/regions and get connected anywhere in the world as soon as they land.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Adapter. You’ll need to be able to plug things into the outlets! I recommend this Universal Power Adapter with Type C Plug + More, so you can use it for more than just one place/trip!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Apple AirTags: To track your bags so they don’t get lost in transit (which is known to happen in Israel)! I have them, plus AirTag Covers (these are the ones I have, and they have amazing reviews).

๐Ÿ‘‰ Padlock for Hostels & Luggage Storage: These will save you money, especially at hostels because you can avoid having to rent a padlock!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Sleep Masks: I’ve been using these for years – they’re the best because they have contours for your eyes and nose, and they’re adjustable. Also, this is a pack of 3 which is great so you have extras if one gets lost or dirty!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Earthbreeze Fragrance-Free Laundry Detergent Sheets: These are the greatest invention EVER… I’ve replaced liquid detergent with them. You can use for washing machines and hand washing, and they’re perfect for packing because they aren’t liquid and are super lightweight.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Anker Portable Charger: These are the lightest on the market, as well as top-rated by multiple experts! Necessary for a backup to charge your phone and bluetooth headphones, and especially for if you find yourself without an outlet, or without a converter, which can be such a lifesaver when you’re walking all around TLV!

๐Ÿ‘‰ A Packable Daypack: This daypack packs into a small pouch for a daypack that can get dirty – the camera insert case I listed above fits in here as well! It’s lightweight, plus it has places for drinks on both sides… and I can vouch for it as I’ve been using it on multiple trips now!

๐Ÿ‘‰ You’ll need sunscreen, a hat and a good water bottle (like this Brita one that filters it for you):

๐Ÿ’ฆ Check Prices on Brita Stainless Steel Water Bottle

๐Ÿ‘‰ Electrolyte packets like these for better hydration, because walking around in the sun will get to you more than you’d think in Israel.

๐Ÿ‘‰ This microfiber towel for the beach is perfect to avoid having to rent one, and you can also use it for yoga:

๐ŸŒŠ Check Prices on this Microfiber Towel Here

๐Ÿ‘‰ Good walking/hiking sandals like Chacos that can also get wet, so perfect for all those hikes (even in waterfalls):

๐Ÿ‘‰ Blundstones (especially for Fall or Winter), which youโ€™ll see most Israelis wearing:

What to Consider for Staying In Tel Aviv

Where to stay in Tel Aviv? Near the beach is always an excellent idea!

Here are some more tips (from someone who has lived in Tel Aviv) for what to keep in mind for visiting:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Middle East Culture. Tel Aviv is known for its lively nightlife and late dining habits. Locals often stay out late, especially in the summer (even at the beach) because it cools down once the sun goes down!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Language. Most people in Tel Aviv speak English, but it’s still a good idea to familiarize yourself with basic Hebrew words and phrases! Check out this podcast for more, and this video to learn the Hebrew alphabet in a fun and easy way!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Forgetting Shabbat. Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest, begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sundown on Saturday. That means weekdays in Israel are Sunday-Thursday, and weekends are Friday-Saturday, and it’s really difficult to get anywhere during Shabbat unless you’re walking. Also keep holidays in mind, because places shut down for them, too.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Littering. Littering can be an issue in Israel on the beaches and in parks, and most people hate it! You can participate in beach clean-ups that happen often, and just please don’t litter.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Leaving your stuff on the beach. Never, ever leave your stuff unattended on the beach! One of the biggest issues when I worked at the hostel was guests coming back from the beach having had their phones or wallets stolen.

Where To Stay In Tel Aviv: FAQs

Refugees mosaic in Tel Aviv, Israel

๐Ÿ‘‰ Is it better to stay in Tel Aviv or Jaffa?

Either place is a good idea, especially if you pick the right neighborhood for your tastes! Personally, my favorite place to stay is Jaffa (I lived there) because of the location near Old Yafo, the port, the famous flea market and more. Other Tel Aviv places might be more central to getting around, however, as Jaffa is at the southern end of Tel Aviv (an hour by bus from Tel Aviv University in the North near Yarkon Park).

๐Ÿ‘‰ What is the best area to walk around Tel Aviv?

The Tayelet (beach promenade), Old Jaffa/Yafo, HaYarkon Park, Florentin and Neve Tzedek are the best places to walk around Tel Aviv!

๐Ÿ‘‰ What is the best area to stay in Israel?

The best areas to stay in Israel depend on your visit! If you’re looking for modern city vibes, beach life and nightlife, stay in Tel Aviv. If you’re looking for more low-key, but still city and beach vibes, stay in Haifa at the bottom of the mountain. There are more areas to visit, but those are the top two, where you can go on day trips to more sites from each!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Is it worth staying in Tel Aviv?

Absolutely, YES! Tel Aviv is one of the most fun cities in the world. From the excellent beaches, to the energy, food, nightlife and culture, you don’t want to miss out on this amazing place!
