You will be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the flavors of each dish, every restaurant was a totally different experience from the last. What to Consider for Visiting Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv has its own unique culture. Here are some important considerations to keep in mind when planning your visit:

👉 Middle East Culture. Tel Aviv is known for its lively nightlife and late dining habits. Locals often stay out late, especially in the summer (even at the beach) because it cools down once the sun goes down! Embrace this cultural aspect and adjust your schedule accordingly to fully experience the city’s energy.

👉 Budget for Expenses. Tel Aviv is an expensive city, but there are ways to manage your expenses. While dining at restaurants can be pricey, one cost-effective option is to explore the local markets. The markets, such as Carmel Market and Levinsky Market, offer a variety of delicious street food and fresh produce at more affordable prices. This allows you to experience the local flavors while keeping your budget in check.

👉 Language. Most people in Tel Aviv speak English, but it’s still a good idea to familiarize yourself with basic Hebrew words and phrases! Check out this podcast for more, and this video to learn the Hebrew alphabet in a fun and easy way!

👉 If you’re a solo female traveler. Tel Aviv is generally considered a safe city for travelers, including solo female travelers. However, it’s important to exercise caution and be prepared (men are more bold and have stereotypes, especially of American women). For more information, listen to this podcast!

What not to do in Tel Aviv

When visiting Israel, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the local customs and cultural practices to ensure a respectful and enjoyable experience. Here are some key tips on what not to do in Israel:

Forgetting Shabbat

Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest, begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sundown on Saturday. That means weekdays in Israel are Sunday-Thursday, and weekends are Friday-Saturday!

During this time, many businesses, including shops and restaurants, close, and public transportation is significantly reduced. It’s important to plan ahead and be aware that certain services may not be available during Shabbat. Respect the observance of Shabbat by refraining from loud activities or playing music in public areas.

Littering

Littering can be an issue in Israel on the beaches and in parks, and most people hate it! You can participate in beach clean-ups that happen often, and just please don’t litter.

Leaving your stuff on the beach

Never, ever leave your stuff unattended on the beach! One of the biggest issues when I worked at a Tel Aviv hostel was guests coming back from the beach having had their phones or wallets stolen. It can even happen if you’re not watching your stuff where someone takes it from right under your nose, so just always make sure you’re keeping an eye on your things.

Not familiarizing yourself with public transportation rules

Israel has an efficient public transportation system, including buses and trains. When using public transportation, it’s important to follow the rules and regulations. Remember to validate your ticket when boarding a bus or train and be considerate of other passengers by giving up your seat to those in need.
