Is Israel safe for travel in 2026? Currently with the Iran war, it is not recommended to travel to Israel. So far, 40+ buildings have been destroyed, and people are running to shelters a lot. In addition, flights are getting cancelled, which means visitors can get “stuck” in the country for longer than planned.

While daily life is going on as much as possible, it is highly stressful (although Israelis are used to this enough that they go on their days as usual when they can!).

When travel to Israel is possible again, I recommend visiting Israel with a reputable tour guide or tour company if it’s your first time visiting, but you can also do solo travel in Tel Aviv – just make sure you stay in a hotel or apartment with a shelter, and don’t be afraid to ask for advice!

Visiting Israel and talking with Israelis is the best way to start understanding the conflict and getting away from everything in the news and social media, and as someone who lived in Israel, I highly recommend this!

I would also be sure to exercise caution and have travel insurance (I use Allianz), just in case!

• US Citizens must now participate in the Mandatory Israeli Electronic Travel Authorization Program that started recently. US Citizens must submit an ETA-IL travel authorization form online prior to travel (there’s a fee of NIS 25).
• Not to travel to Northern Israel within 8 kilometers/5 miles of the Lebanese and Syrian borders (due to military activities there)
• No travel to Gaza or the West bank
• There are random attacks at times, and traveling is at your own risk
• Download the Home Front Command Red Alert application or similar apps to receive real time alerts for rocket and missile attacks and armed UAV intrusions

It’s important to be aware of the current ongoing security situation. The US government has issued a Travel Advisory, urging caution and highlighting potential risks such as terrorist attacks and civil unrest.

Most of the time, most danger is rare in areas visited by tourists, and the areas where most people live and travel (including Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem) are usually relatively safe (not including the currently situation).

In more peaceful times, rockets are fired towards northern or southern Israel maybe 2-3 times per year. Currently that is happening more often, but in the areas where most people live and travel, there is the iron dome and bomb shelters, as well as sirens that go off so people can find shelter.

The main issues with safety include:

• Rockets being fired at Israel. While the iron dome keeps people safe, there is risk of rocket parts landing where you are, and some rockets have hit buildings and other places (the ones from Iran are huge, not small pieces).
• Stress from the sirens and rockets/iron dome system, which is loud and can disrupt activities, including sleep.
• Terrorist attacks on the ground.

When I lived in Yafo (Jaffa), there were a couple of incidents near me, and the sirens went off one time that I can recall. Another time I had to wait to go back inside my apartment due to a possible detonating device they were looking for. However, statistically, traveling in Israel is safer than living in the US and other countries in normal times.

Currently, everyone I know in Israel is going about their lives – besides, of course, the sirens and stress from the war, and the people serving in the IDF. In addition, thousands of Israelis have been displaced from the northern and southern parts of Israel and have been living in hotels and hostels (including the one where I worked).

It’s important to stay away from Gaza, Northern Israel near borders, and other border areas completely, and if you travel to Bethlehem or other tourist sites in the West Bank, to go on with a tour. Here’s a full list of places to avoid.
