Is Egypt Safe For Travel In 2026? Important Advice Amidst War

Is Egypt safe for travel in 2026? Everyone on social media and online searches are asking this question right now.

So far, we don’t know when the current war will end, and the US Department of State has issued travel warnings to Egypt due to terrorism.

The short answer is that currently, travel to Egypt is not as safe as usual due to retaliatory strikes by Iran.

Personally, as someone who has traveled to Egypt solo and on a tour, as well as living in Israel and traveling to other places solo, I would reconsider any travel plans to Egypt for the near future, and make sure to research and talk to trusted sources first.

Many people are continuing their travels in Egypt, so it is possible. Most tourist sites are not close to the border. If you choose to travel in Egypt, exercise caution and make sure to have travel insurance (I use Allianz).

Is it safe to travel to Egypt right now?

Currently, travel to many parts of Egypt is not recommended due to terrorist threats and the war in Iran.

Two Israeli tourists and an Egyptian tour guide were shot and killed by an Egyptian police officer at Pompey’s Pillar a tourist site in Alexandria on October 8, 2023, and at least one other person was injured.

There was also an incident at a Red Sea resort where a drone fell and injured people near a medical facility on Oct. 27, 2023.

If you are traveling in Egypt, be aware that borders can close at any time without notice, and avoid demonstrations and rallies for your own safety, as these can become violent.

What is the current situation in Egypt?

Since the start of the current war in Iran, there have been retaliatory strikes across the Middle East, making them unpredictable and the region more unsafe than usual. In addition, many flights have been cancelled or delayed, leaving tourists stranded.

As for the Israel-Hamas war, the reason for Egypt’s border closure after October 7, 2023 was for the same reason as Israel’s, which was to keep terrorists out, and beyond that, to prevent Palestinians from moving to Egypt. This blockade from Egypt has been enforced for 16 years from land, sea and air. Gaza was part of Egypt prior to the 1967 war, but Egypt didn’t let Palestinians there become citizens.

Are Egypt Tours Safe in 2026?

In times of relative peace, tours of Egypt are safe and the best way to get around Egypt, mostly because sites are far apart and require a lot of travel. With a licensed tour guide and reputable tour company, you can be the most likely to avoid any dangerous situations, as well as avoiding other issues faced by tourists.

My visit to Egypt included a tour, some solo travel in Cairo (the people with my hostel were amazing and showed me around so I wasn’t alone at night) and a one-day tour to Alexandria. I highly recommend going with a tour, then adding solo or other travels if you want to experience the country apart from a tour group (in peaceful times).

Once the Iran war is no longer a threat, I recommend a tour and extra precautions for any solo travel, as well as getting insurance so if you need to cancel, it won’t be so harsh on your bank account!

Why is Egypt so dangerous?

Egypt has lists online of things to be aware of, because danger exists; however, speaking fro experience I can say that Egyptians are extremely hospitable to tourists and my trip was amazing.

Generally speaking, Egypt is much safer than it used to be and incidents are relatively rare. The current conditions add another dimension to this, which is why people are advising against travel to Egypt for the time being.

Even in Cairo, which is a shock to visit for most people due to the state of the infrastructure, the absolute chaos of the traffic, the low state of cleanliness and more things, the hospitality of the people, sites and experience quickly turned that part of my trip into one I recommend (in peaceful times).

Is it safe to travel to Egypt as a woman in 2026?

In general, it is safe to travel to Egypt as a woman. I traveled there and did some solo travel as well as tours, and I felt safe in general, although the inequality there for women was palpable for me as a tourist from the US.

I stayed at a hostel in Cairo, and there were men around my age and younger who accompanied me to the market at night, which I was grateful for since I didn’t feel as generally safe to walk around alone at night as in other countries.

I also recommend being vigilant in general as a woman and if you feel unsafe, contact the police. Some incidents have happened, but the laws for women’s rights have improved in Egypt and things are better than they used to be.

The following is from the Foreign Office: β€œFemale travellers should exercise caution when travelling alone, particularly at night, in buses, taxis and microbuses. If you are travelling on public transport including microbuses, avoid being the last passenger left on board.”

Egyptian Government

Egypt’s government is a Democratic Republic. In 2005 they held their first democratic elections (before then, there were different forms of government). The current constitution of Egypt “proclaims the Arab Republic of Egypt to be a democratic state with Islam as its state religion and Arabic as its national language.”

πŸ‘‰ Is tourism declining in Egypt?

The current security situation has indeed impacted tourism in Egypt. Many visitors are reconsidering travel plans due to safety concerns.

Before the current situation with the Israel-Hamas conflict and heightened security concerns, Egypt’s tourism industry had faced challenges, but it had also shown signs of recovery.

In the years following the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, which led to political upheaval and instability, Egypt experienced a significant decline in tourism. The subsequent years saw efforts by the Egyptian government to revive the industry, including increased security measures and marketing campaigns to attract tourists back to the country.

By the late 2010s, there were positive indicators of a tourism recovery in Egypt. The country witnessed a gradual increase in visitor numbers, with tourists returning to explore its historical sites, including the pyramids, temples, and archaeological treasures.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic dealt a severe blow to global tourism, affecting destinations worldwide, including Egypt. Travel restrictions, lockdowns, and safety concerns further impacted the industry.
