6. The Alamo (Mission San Antonio de Valero)

The Alamo (Mission San Antonio de Valero) is the most famous of the San Antonio Missions. It’s the site where the well-known Battle of the Alamo took place in 1836, a significant battle in the Texas Revolution.

13. Majestic & Empire Theatres

The Majestic and Empire Theatres are two historic theatres that are both located in Downtown San Antonio on Houston Street, and are popular photo spots.

The Majestic Theatre was built in 1929 by Jon Eberson, in Spanish Mediterranean architectural style. It’s a National Historic Landmark and was renovated in the 1980s-1990s.

The Empire Theatre (Charline McCombs Empire Theatre) was built in 1914 by architects Mauran, Russell & Crow of St. Louis, and was inspired by European palazzos. It used to be a Vaudeville house before it showed films. It was restored in 1998 and is also a National Historic Landmark.

The Japanese Tea Garden is on the National Register of Historic Places free to the public.

The caverns also have prehistoric archaeological remains:

The Caverns were discovered in 1960 by four college students. It’s now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Artifacts from 10,000 years ago were excavated in 1963, including stone tools and more, as well as specimens from species that became extinct 12,000 years ago.

The most recent archaeological excavation took place in 2003 by the University of Texas at San Antonio, at the cavern entrance. Prehistoric remains were found, including a cooking hearth, stone tools and plant remains.

58. World’s Largest Cowboy Boots

The World’s Largest Cowboy Boots are located right by the Saks Fifth Avenue at the North Star Mall. They’re in the Guiness Book of World Records.

They were built by Bob “Daddy-O” Wade, who was a pioneer of cowboy funk art, in 1979. The faux ostrich-and-calf-skin boots boots are 35’3″ tall, 30 ft long, & 9 ft wide. They weigh 10,000 pounds, and were made with scavenged junk materials.

Wade also wrote a song about the boots called “Too High, Too Wide and Too Long”, and there’s a documentary that shares the name.
