“I loved the décor and the atmosphere of the old timey building. There’s abundance of hints that it really used to be a train station. Staff was friendly, accommodating, and eager to help. There’s live music in the afternoon and evening, and you can hear it reverberate through the hallways, which was nice. At the bar in the hotel lobby, the flipboard chatters and displays hotel messages every now and then, and it really adds to the whole experience. Despite all this, the hotel didn’t feel antiquated. My room was rather large although it wasn’t a suite, and it even had a small outdoor yard/personal space. The bed was comfy and the pillows were on the larger side. The TV was plenty big and was on a perfect eye level, and I liked the fact that the room had a desk so that I can get some work done. I wouldn’t mind staying here next time for longer or try the suite.”

Photography Gear for Nashville
Wondering what to bring for Nashville for photography? Here are some of my top options (you can find even more gear and guides on the photography page):
✅ Camera
👉 If you’re a beginner and/or looking for a more affordable camera that still takes high-level photos, check out this guide to the Best Cheap Cameras For Travel Photography Beginners.
👉 Check out this post on surf cameras for a full list of beginner-to-expert level cameras of each type, and more gear for outdoor and water photography, which is ideal if you’re looking to do a lot of lake and river photography in Nashville (but also, these cameras are fantastic for all kinds of photography and video).
Wondering what I use? I currently use a Canon 6D. It has wifi connectivity, is a full-frame professional camera. However, I’m looking to upgrade to Mirrorless soon because it’s lighter weight for travel – check out the posts above for my top Mirrorless picks!
- Well-built and weather sealed
- Lightweight for travel
- 26.2 MP full-frame CMOS sensor
- 45-point all cross-type AF system
📸 For even more affordable DSLR options, check out this post on the 5 Best DSLR Cameras Under $300.
✅ Lens
Depending on your photography style, you might want a wide angle, telephoto (for close-up nature and wildlife photography), and standard zoom for an all-around lens.
I use this Canon EF 16-35mm Wide-Angle Zoom Lens, because I love wide-angle photos but don’t want to sacrifice zoom capability:
- Make sure this fits by entering your model number
- Full-time manual focus permits critical focusing precision, even in AF mode. Help provide excellent color balance
- Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm
- Dual Pixel CMOS AF covers Approx. 100% Area with 1,053 AF Areas
✅ Dome for dual under- and over-water photos
If you want half-under, half-over water photos (like in Nashville’s Cumberland River, lakes and ponds), you’ll need a dome like this one that works with a GoPro:
✅ GoPro Action Camera
Action Cameras are the best as an addition to your main camera to capture water sports, hiking, biking or horseback riding, ropes courses, whitewater rafting or anything that involves movement!
The GoPro HERO 11 Black is waterproof down to 10m (33ft) without housing:
- 5.3K60 Ultra HD Video
- Emmy Award- Winning HyperSmooth Image Stabilization
- Up to 75 minutes of uninterrupted video recording
Tip: For water adventures deeper than 10m (33ft), waterproof housing like this is needed:

✅ 4-In-One Travel Tripod
I love this tripod because it’s the perfect versatile tool for travel photography! It works for both DSLRs/Mirrorless cameras and Smartphones, pus it doubles as a selfie stick, monopod and trekking poles! It’s also lightweight and folds up small enough to fit in your suitcase (and did I mention, it’s affordable?):
- Beginner-friendly with room for growth
- Works with smartphones & cameras
- Folds up small & lightweight
- Turns into a selfie stick & trekking poles
- Comes with a carrying case
- Affordability
✅ Memory Card for DSLR/Mirrorless Cameras
SanDisk Extreme Pro memory cards are the best because they prevent issues with photography and video that happen with lower quality memory cards:
- Beginner-friendly with room for growth
- Best for taking more photos & video
- Temperature Proof, Water Proof, Shock Proof & X-ray Proof
- Affordability
✅ Remote Shutter
A Remote Shutter, like this one for Canon, is excellent for low-light and long-exposure photography, including sunrise or night photos:
- Compatibility with a lot of cameras (be sure to check for yours)
- Works at 2.4GHz frequency with 16 available channels
- Reduces camera shake
- 5 Shooting Modes
Here’s a remote shutter (2-pack) for smartphones:
- Seamless Selfies and Steady Shots - Compatible with Social Media Apps
- Pocket-Sized Convenience
- Operational range of up to 30 feet (10 meters)
✅ Circular Polarizer
A Circular Polarizer is perfect for capturing water reflections and getting the bottom of bodies of water – just make sure to get the correct size for your lens:
- Circular polarizer--one of the most popular special-effect filters
- Deepens the intensity of blue skies; reduces or eliminates glare
- Multi-coating reduces reflection
✅ Drone
The DJI Mini 4 Pro is one of the best drone options for travel photography. It’s lightweight weigh and folds to fit in a camera bag!
- Lightweight and compact, no registration required for easy travel
- Stunning 4K/60fps HDR vertical videos, perfect for capturing various scenic landscapes
- Omnidirectional obstacle sensing for enhanced safety during flights

What to Consider for Photography in Nashville
👉 Weather. Nashville has hot and muggy summers, cold and wet winters, and a lot of cloudy weather. Make sure to plan your visit accordingly and know how to care for your camera in variable weather conditions! The fall leaves make a fantastic time to visit Nashville for photography when it’s a bit cooler outside.
Nashville is in the South, so be aware that on snow days, the city will close up and you won’t be able to get into most places (even sometimes with flurries, it all depends)!
👉 Don’t go to photograph celebs. Nashville is home to a lot of country music stars, but the vibe is that locals leave them alone to live their lives. Instead, support the local musicians at places like The Bluebird Cafe, any of the downtown Honky Tonks, or more local spots.
👉 Plan before you go. There are so many amazing and diverse things to photograph in Nashville. My advice is to plan and book your hotels in advance, make reservations at hotels when it’s an option if you’re set on going, and book any tours or experiences beforehand. Things get crowded and sell out! Also, plan your photography goals – do. you want a mix of quintessential tourist Music City Spots with outdoor adventures? Or do you want to make sure to photograph local musicians and get some fun street photography? Make a list for each day, with alternatives when needed, before you go!
