The Best Places Stay In Tahiti In 2026 For Solo Travelers (Areas, Hotels + More)

Wondering where to stay in Tahiti, French Polynesia? You’ve come to the right place!
I spent a month solo traveling in French Polynesia, with close to 3 weeks on Tahiti – part of it was on Tahiti Nui, and the other part on Tahiti Iti, so I got a really good sense of the island! I also spent time on Raiatea, Huahine and Moorea on my trip.
I rented a car most of the time and enjoyed exploring the islands. I started out with hostel stays booked, and changed my mind after the first night which gave me even more experience with different types of stays on Tahiti.
If you’re short on time, check out my quick top picks for each budget range for Tahiti, and then I’ll offer even more areas and places to stay in Tahiti, plus Moorea and even one on Bora Bora!
Kia Ora Lodge is where I stayed on Tahiti Iti, the smaller part of the island. You need to either rent a car, be able to drive a scooter (which they have available for rentals on site), or there’s a regular bike or walking to fully explore this part of Tahiti.
You can also use this place as a retreat getaway – they have a pool, outdoor fitness center and shared kitchen, and the hosts are the nicest people! I originally had booked a bed in the dorm but switched to a private room and loved my stay. The room was big, with AC and a private outdoor bathroom area surrounded by tropical nature!
The hosts also gave me fruits and avocados in my room that were picked on the property!
I walked to the grocery store (the biggest one I went to in Tahiti, near other shops) and restaurants, and the host family invited me to eat with them a few times. Even with a language barrier, this was my favorite place for getting to know the local family and learn more about Polynesian culture and life!
In addition, I got an airport pickup and ferry drop-off. They recommended tours and activities as well.

“I enjoyed staying at the Kia Ora Lodge! Valea is such a lovely host, she even dropped me off at the Bus Station after Check Out. The place is a little further away from Papeete and the Airport so it’s actually good to have a car or a scooter. But there are Busses as well! I stayed in the Dorm Room. There is a well equipped Kitchen with an extra tap for drinking water, a Gym and a Pool. The whole place is very clean and so nice to just relax for a little while and enjoy the Island!”

“This place is AMAZING. We stayed in Vai Iti, which had an uninterrupted view of the sea and it was not visible by anyone; we had COMPLETE privacy and our own jacuzzi and hammock. Where To Stay In Tahiti: Papeete (Tahiti Nui)
Papeete, the capital of Tahiti Nui is the primary gateway into the islands. The city includes a mix of French and Polynesian influences with colorful markets, cultural attractions and a variety of dining options.
Papeete also includes a diverse range of accommodations for to every budget, from luxury hotels to hostels and apartments. Here are my top recommendations:
Best Budget Option (Papeete): Mahana Lodge Hostel
Mahana Lodge Hostel is located right in Papeete, which makes it ideal for those without a car.
I stayed here my first night – I ended up deciding to switch to an apartment, but that was because I realized I’m too old for hostels (ha)! This hostel is basically what you picture when you think of a hostel – nothing fancy, but there are multiple bunk rooms, bathrooms and common areas, plus a kitchen and a lobby on the main floor with a small convenience shop!
The staff is really friendly and helpful, as well. You have to take your shoes off, and there are stairs going into the main areas.
It’s in walking distance of restaurants, but parking is also difficult and during the day, you have to pay the meter.

Taravao, located on Tahiti Iti, offers an off-the-beaten-path experience if you’re looking for an even more adventurous stay surrounded by lush landscapes and untamed nature!
Best Budget Option (Taravao): Kia Ora Lodge Taravao
Kia Ora Lodge is where I stayed when I was back on Tahiti, mostly working. It’s on another part of the island that I had planned on exploring more, but you really need to either rent a car, be able to drive a scooter (which they have available for rentals on site), or there’s a regular bike or walking.
I’d been to Tahiti, Raiatea and Huahine before returning to Tahiti, and I was gearing up for a blogging retreat so I just ended up using the 2 weeks there as more of a vacation with just chilling out and working – there was a pool there!
This is a hostel with a dorm and private rooms, so I had originally booked the dorm but upgraded to the private room. I loved the atmosphere, as I felt like I was in the jungle, with amazing views, excellent hosts and my own outdoor bathroom and shower!
My room was spacious with AC, sliding glass doors with a barrier for privacy and curtains, a microwave, fridge and electric kettle with coffee (there’s a kitchen outside, downstairs by the dorm). They also gave me fruits and avocados in my room that were picked on the property!
I walked to the grocery store (the biggest one I went to in Tahiti, near other shops) and restaurants, and the host family invited me to eat with them a few times. Even with a language barrier, this was my favorite place for getting to know the local family and learn more about Polynesian culture and life!

The booking process was great with Richard and when we arrived, Nir and Tiare were available for any questions and help we needed. Stepping off the private deck into the water never got old and we had fun snorkeling around the area. The area was very quiet and peaceful, but there were a few roosters within earshot so be prepared with earplugs if that wakes you up. The kitchen had all the essentials you’d need to prepare meals which was perfect for us. We can’t wait to return!”

Can You Stay In Tahiti On A Budget?

It makes sense to think Tahiti is a vacation spot only for people with money, but that’s not entirely true. I went there on a budget, and while it’s still more expensive in general than many backpacking destinations, you can absolutely explore these islands and not spend crazy amounts of money!
If you’re on a really tight budget, I recommend staying in hostels. I originally booked hostels and then realized I didn’t want to stay in them, but that was mostly because I realized I had too much luggage, I need good AC because of my asthma and I’m not in my 20s anymore (tear)… I switched to apartments and a private room in a hostel, and it was mostly affordable.
I definitely spent more on this trip than some others I’ve taken, but that was partly because I paid for flights and the ferry for trips to Raiatea, Huahine and Moorea! Plus, I attended a blogging retreat that added to my costs.

What you’ll need for trips in Tahiti & French Polynesia
To prepare for a trip to Tahiti and French Polynesia, the first thing to know is what time of year you’re going for the best weather, and to prepare for lots of sun, humidity and heat, as well as some rainy days!
🏝️ Travel Insurance
Travel Insurance is always a necessity, in my opinion! Here are my top two options:
- Allianz (This is what I use personally)
- Safety Wing
🏝️ ESIM
Airalo eSIM is the world’s first eSIM store, already used by over 1 million travelers. With Airalo, you can download and install a digital data pack for over 200 countries/regions and get connected anywhere in the world as soon as they land. I used this on my French Polynesia Trip, and as of the time I used it, you use the app to top up every week or when you use up the allotted data – whichever comes first.
🏝️ Electrolyte Packets
Electrolyte packets like these are necessary because water isn’t enough to replace those minerals that you lose from sweating when you’re out in the sun a lot. This is perfect for hiking days as well as beach and water days. On boat tours, they offer water and other drinks including rum, and it’s important to replenish those electrolytes!
🏝️ Reef-Safe, Allergen-Free Sunscreen
Badger sunscreen is my newest discovery and I’m obsessed – I have eczema and a lot of allergies, and this sunscreen has only FOUR ingredients! I used it throughout my entire French Polynesia trip and highly recommend it, as I plan on continuing to use it. Just make sure to reapply as needed!
🏝️ Snorkeling Mask
This is optional – I used the provided gear on my boat tours. However, you may want your own for any extra snorkeling. Plus, I noticed everyone wearing these all-in-one masks (this one includes a camera mount) that looked so much easier to take on and off, and I wished I had one!
🏝️ Swim shirt
After I got sunburn on my back during my first boat tour, I wore my own shirt in Huahine because I hadn’t bought one of these yet. Later in Huahine, I bought one in a local store, but I wished I’d brought one along! They’re SPF and good for guarding from reef rash, and they’re water-friendly!
🏝️ Hiking Shoes
Hiking shoes like these or Chacos (sandals) are my go-tos for trips that involve hiking. In French Polynesia, I had my Chacos, which I wore most of the time (they can go in water, so I even wore them while snorkeling) and my Brooks running shoes.
🚶♀️ Check Prices for Chaco Hiking Sandals Here
🏝️ Hat
The sun in Tahiti (especially in the summer) is really harsh, and the heat can give some people issues. When you’re outside most of the time, I highly recommend bringing a hat that goes all the way around, like this one!
🏝️ Daypack
I use this packable daypack because it folds easily into a pouch that you can pack into a suitcase, it’s lightweight and waterproof, and it has pockets for water bottles and more things! It was perfect for taking on boat tours and hiking.
🏝️ More items:
- This Universal Power Adapter
- Anker Portable Charger to make sure your phone, camera battery etc. doesn’t die so you can take all the photos!
- This microfiber towel for the beach is perfect for packing and drying fast, and you can also use it for yoga:
- Shorts and t-shirts
- Swimsuit
- Lightweight rain jacket
- Credit card, ATM card & cash
- Camera, GoPro & Accessories like a tripod
- Sleep Mask – I recommend this since the roosters will probably wake you up early, to maximize sleep time! You can also bring ear plugs if they work for you.
- Microfiber Towel – so you have a towel that’s easy to pack and quick drying
- Earthbreeze Fragrance-Free Laundry Detergent Sheets – there’s usually detergent at the places with laundry machines, but these are easy to use if you have to hand-wash anything. I buy the hypoallergenic ones so I always bring and use these!
- Apple AirTags: To track your bags so they don’t get lost in transit (which is known to happen in Israel)! I have them, plus AirTag Covers (these are the ones I have, and they have amazing reviews).
- Padlock for Hostels & Luggage Storage: These will save you money, especially at hostels because you can avoid having to rent a padlock!
I also brought protein powder, collagen powder and protein bars, which all came in handy during my trip, especially for snacks while driving and in my apartment in Tahiti! Check out my go-to, allergen-free travel snacks and more packing recommendations on my Travel Resources page here.
What to Consider for Staying In Tahiti

👉 Driving In Papeete can be confusing and frustrating: The island is small, and Papeete is the biggest city in French Polynesia… and the traffic reflects the lack of space. I recommend avoiding rush hour when possible and arriving early if you want a parking space. One night, I tried to go to a restaurant in the city and I could never even find the entry area, so after trying a few times I gave up. Also, you’ll have to pay for parking on the street in the city. I enjoyed staying away from the main city as much as possible!
👉 Sunscreen and a shirt for snorkeling: I traveled to French Polynesia as a solo traveler, and on the boat tours most people were with their family and they mostly spoke French, as most tourists are from France (naturally). In Raiatea, I was hesitant to awkwardly ask someone to put sunscreen on the top part of my back where I couldn’t reach, and I ended up with sunburn, so I wore a t-shirt on my boat tour in Huahine.
👉 Download Google Maps before your trip: In Raiatea, I didn’t do this right away and ended up without service, driving the long way around the island without realizing it! From then on, I downloaded the maps.
