Gorgeous Ārahurahu Marae: A Photographic Expedition
Nestled in the valley of Tefa’aiti, ‘Ārahurahu Marae stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage that thrived in French Polynesia before the arrival of Europeans. Restored in 1953, this marae serves as a window into the ancient Polynesian way of life.
This marae, the largest ceremonial complex in Tahiti, played a pivotal role in the daily life of the local king (arii) and served as the central meeting place for the small “nation” of the valley.

Ārahurahu Marae Temple Platform
‘Ārahurahu Marae is not just a physical structure; it represents the core of Polynesian communal gatherings, with its rectangular layout, encompassed by stone settings, and a raised altar part (ahu) standing at an impressive 3 meters high.
The marae continues to be a focal point during the national Heiva festival each July, where Polynesian artists showcase their talents, albeit with some modern adaptations.
