Captivating Marae Ta’ata: Tahiti’s Hidden History

Marae Ta’ata, situated at PK 19 in Paea (what used to be called Mano-rua) in French Polynesia’s Society Islands, stands as a monumental testament to the intricate history and political alliances of ancient Tahiti.

What sets this royal marae apart is its unique architectural composition, uniting three distinct marae, each constructed in a different manner for three prominent chiefs: Pouira o Tevahitua i Patea, Tetooha o Taura atua i Patea, and Punuaaitua. This reflects the dynamic political landscape, with each marae enclosure symbolizing distinct alliances of the region.

The arrangement of cut stones and the discovery of human bones within the site underscore the royal status of these chiefs and the profound significance of Marae Ta’ata in Tahitian history.

Over the years, Marae Ta’ata faced neglect until archaeologist Kenneth Emory inventoried it in 1925. It wasn’t until 1973, under the guidance of Professor José Garanger, that extensive excavations and restoration efforts were initiated, revealing layers of historical significance beneath the pyramid ahu.
