Boone & Blue Ridge Mountains Winter Weather

Winter in Boone lasts from late November to early March, and weather varies by elevation. Boone, situated at 3,300 feet, encounters substantial snowfall and occasional blizzards, with temperatures dropping below zero degrees Fahrenheit. Lower elevations experience a milder winter with less snow accumulation.

In college at App State, I have memories involving lots of snow and sledding, tubing and more, as well as ice storms where I couldn’t walk on outdoor surfaces after icy rain. I also remember that there could be a lot of wind with these storms, as well as fog on the mountain roads.

🚗 Tip: Be careful of black ice when it’s dark. Driving in the mountains in winter especially takes practice, so if you’re not familiar, be cautious.

On the Blue Ridge Parkway in the wintertime, elevated sections face colder, windier, and shadier conditions, often remaining wet or icy due to limited plowing. Persistent freezing temperatures prompt safety-related closures, with some areas, particularly those with frequent tunnels, shut throughout winter.

Spring: As winter transitions to spring along the Blue Ridge Parkway, the overlap extends through March. Abundant rainfall brings lush vegetation, with March seeing occasional cold and even late snow.

April introduces cooler temperatures, marking the rainiest period, while the weather oscillates rapidly between sunshine and rain. Chilly nights persist into May, with warm days and then spring represented by rhododendron blooms in June.

The Parkway’s varying elevations, from under 650 feet to over 6,000 feet, amplify the climatic diversity, with temperatures fluctuating significantly across communities and mountaintops. Clear skies in lower elevations don’t guarantee pleasant conditions at higher altitudes, so be sure to check forecasts and dress for the weather at the time of your visit.

Summer: Summer has heat and humidity distinct from the surrounding communities. The temperate rainforests along much of the Parkway experience constant rainfall, particularly in July, with daily thunderstorms being the norm. Gear for the Exploring Boone & The Blue Ridge Parkway

The weather in Boone and the surrounding areas can be unpredictable, and it can change depending on your altitude. Be prepared for windy and wet conditions, snow and rain, and dress in layers.

A headlamp is needed for when it’s dark in the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially if you’re going for photography at night, sunrise or sunset. Make sure to have this if you’ll be hiking in the dark, at dusk or dawn, or when there’s dark clouds out.

It gets really sunny, and even when it’s cloudy you still need protection from the sun, especially at higher altitudes. I use Badger sunscreen because it’s reef safe and only has 4 ingredients!

What to Consider for Photography in Boone & The Blue Ridge Parkway

👉 Safety and preparation. Please, please know what safety precautions to take before you go hiking, and for driving and participating in winter sports in Boone, Blowing Rock and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

👉 Time of day and lighting. For sunrise, sunset and night photos, bring your tripod and remote shutter, and get there early to make sure you have enough time to find your spot and get set up. Make sure to pay attention to ISO settings as well and keep them low enough for the lighting. You can also bring a circular polarizer for the best lake reflection photos.

👉 Wildlife Photography Tips. Don’t approach wildlife – instead, use at least a 400mm lens to zoom for photos. Not only is it against the park rules to approach wildlife, but it’s also unsafe. You can also get amazing photos of animals in their environment with less than 400mm zoom. Study up on animals and how they interact and move to anticipate when to take photos of them.

👉 Nature First. Make sure to remember where you are and protect your safety, and the environment, over all else. Be safe around the wildlife and know the parkway rules. Also pay attention to plants and stay away from plants like poison ivy.
