Fall In New York: Dates and Weater

Fall in New York typically spans from late September to late December. Here’s a rough breakdown of the season:

Late September to Early October in New York

This is the beginning of fall in New York. The weather is still relatively warm in late September, with daytime temperatures in the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit (15-25°C).

As October progresses, temperatures start to drop, especially in the evenings.

September is the clearest month – it starts to become more overcast throughout October, and November is the most overcast month of the Fall in New York.

Mid to Late October in New York

By mid to late October, the fall foliage is usually at its peak, with trees displaying vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow.

October starts to see cooler temps, and some days can be cold (especially in the morning and when the sun goes down, which is getting earlier at this time of year).

Overall, it’s still one of the best times to visit New York for the weather, fall leaves, Halloween festivities and more!

November in New York

November marks the later part of fall in New York. Daytime temperatures typically range from the 40s to the 50s Fahrenheit (4-15°C).

You’re more likely to be cold visiting New York in November (I remember one year at the Macy’s parade with freezing snow)!

The earlier in the month you visit, the more likely you’ll avoid the cold – however, experiencing the Macy’s parade and the beginning of the holiday season in NYC is definitely worthwhile!

December in New York

Fall officially ends in late December when winter begins. Early December can still have some remnants of fall, but by the latter part of the month, winter takes over with colder temperatures and the possibility of more significant snowfall.

Things to remember for visiting New York in the Fall

Keep in mind that these are general guidelines, and specific weather conditions can vary from year to year. Make sure to check the weather forecast closer to your travel dates for more accurate information.

Additionally, the exact timing of fall foliage can vary based on the region within New York State, with upstate areas typically experiencing peak foliage before New York City.

Keep reading to learn more details, where to go for fall foliage, festivals, attractions, what to pack and more!

When should I go to New York for fall colors?

Early October through early November is usually the best time to see the fall colors in New York, although each year is a bit different. Peak time is generally in the latter half of October through early November.

This also depends a bit on where in New York you go – for example, the Adirondacks have the longest leaf season for fall colors! Keep reading for the best time to go to each part of the state for leaf-peeping.

9. Cruises, Sailing & More

👉 This New York City Fall Foliage Brunch Cruise is a popular way to view the fall leaves from a boat with amazing food! It’s a 1920s style yacht, which will take you North by the Palisades.

🌟 Check out this 5-star review from Sabr1naa7:
“My mom & I enjoyed every aspect of this cruise. The Manhattan II is absolutely beautiful inside and out, I was honestly surprised at how clean/nice bathrooms were. It was also very spacious, not overly crowded The food was scrumptious, visually pleasing, and enough for everyone. The staff was excellent- serviced with a smile. The price of ticket was well worth it. Though it was raining on the day we went the views of the fall foliage were still beautiful. Rain doesn’t bother us at all. We still had the option of going outside throughout the ride. The glass ceiling/windows even made it look beautiful to see the rain come down. My only critique would be desserts could be a little better, but that is minor and also personal preference. We actually sat across a lovely couple who said it was their 2nd time on this specific cruise. I, too, plan on going again with the rest of my family & friends. It truly was a lovely experience for us.”

👉 This New York Fall Foliage Sail up the Hudson River is great if you prefer to sail on the Hudson in an actual sailboat! It’s an 80-foot Schooner Adirondack that takes you to the Palisades with hot cocoa, beer or wine.

Here’s a note from the tour that can tell you how different the timing of fall leaves can be in New York: “

Peak fall foliage is not guaranteed. We have seen fall colors at their peak as early as mid-October and as late early December along the waterfront in the Palisades of New Jersey (the prime destination of our fall foliage excursions). Refunds due to ‘lack of color’, will not be honored. Cruising on the Hudson River, north by the Palisades, is a unique and interesting route and is the declared value of this excursion.”

“My wife and I spent a lovely Fall day onboard the schooner Adirondack with our Captain Kat and Becks. They and the crew were friendly, engaging and knowledgeable about our sailing experience on the Hudson. We recommend them highly!!! 😃”

“I was really pleasantly surprised by this tour. I just did it yesterday late morning. I was expecting to just walk through catacombs and maybe hear a spooky story. But Tommy’s knowledge about local history and his religion were fascinating and he brought the tour to life. Standing by the church and listening to him talk about the challenges previous reverends faced with New York gangs was my favourite part of the whole thing. He’s inspired me to read up further on New York history in my spare time. What a guy 🙌”

Fall In New York: Best Times to View Autumn Leaves

Bannermans Island in NY, Fall

The transformation of New York State’s landscape from the green leaves of summer to fall foliage depends on the year, so you should always check – however, there is a bit of a pattern throughout the state where leaves turn to colorful fall hues:

This transition starts in early September in the Adirondack and Catskill mountains, where the first signs of fall foliage begin to emerge.

From there, it cascades down the hills and valleys of the state, painting them in vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold.

As autumn’s grip tightens, the phenomenon eventually culminates in mid-November with the peak foliage in New York City and Long Island.

Over the course of roughly two weeks, this mesmerizing transformation blankets each region in its unique charm, with the pinnacle of brilliance lingering for a fleeting three to four days in any given location.

Here’s more on each part of the state, based on historical data (you’ll still need to check since it’s not always the same):

  • Adirondacks
    • Historical Peak Times: Late September to Mid-October

Fall In New York: What to Pack & Wear

A tourist in NYC in the fall looking over the Highline at the view of buildings and colorful trees, wearing a hat, sweater and backpack

Wondering what to pack, what to wear and other things to bring to be prepared for Fall in New York? The main thing is to layer for the unpredictable weather – some mornings can be cold, then the day gets hot as it goes on! Also, wear good walking shoes – keep reading for suggestions!

Here are some suggestions, based on my own experience:

Jackets for Fall in New York:

👉 A leather jacket is my go-to for Fall in New York for being stylish and staying warm without feeling bulky!

Levi's Women's Faux Leather Belted Motorcycle Jacket (Standard & Plus Sizes)

👉 A trenchcoat is an always fashionable look for NYC, and good for most early to mid-Fall weather (until it gets too cold):

CREATMO US Women's Trench Coat Double-Breasted Classic Lapel Overcoat Belted Slim Outerwear Coat with Detachable Hood

👉 A Denim Jacket is great for early to mid-Fall, especially with layers, and if you know it won’t get too cold:

Kedera Women's Denim Jackets Button Up Long Sleeve Ripped Jean Jacket with Pockets

👉 A Hoodie or sweatshirt is great for early to med-Fall, but if it’s going to get too cold or windy, think about adding a coat:

Minetom Women's Lightweight Pullover Hoodies Casual Long Sleeve Sweatshirts Tops with Pocket

👉 A fleece-lined jacket like this one for any weather can be a great way to be prepared for rain or snow if it’s a possibility when you’re visiting New York in the Fall!

BALEAF Women's Windproof Jacket Hooded Softshell Fleece Lined Waterproof Warm Insulated Outerwear for Winter

More things to pack & bring for Fall in New York:

Hiking shoes standing at the water's edge, with fall leafy trees reflected in the water

👉 Fashionable and good quality walking shoes for all weather: Tennis shoes can actually get cold in colder weather if they’re too breathable – plus, if it gets rainy or snows, it can be even worse!

I recommend Dr. Martens Chelsea boots for NYC especially, but also New York State exploring and hiking, so they’re good for your feet and unpredictable weather – plus they look good on everyone!

Dr. Martens Unisex 2976 Chelsea Boot

Fingerless Gloves: These have been my favorite for years for NYC when it’s cold, because they make it easier to use your phone, pull out your MetroCard for the subway and more. I love ones that have mitten covers you can pin back for when my fingers get cold, too!

C9 Champion Women's Everyday Flip Top Mitten and Fingerless Glove with Reflective Detail
SATINIOR 4 Pairs Cashmere Feel Wrist Fingerless Gloves with Thumb Hole Unisex Cashmere Warm Gloves

👉 A hat like this one is a fabulous way to keep your head warm and protect yourself from the sun in New York! When it gets cold, the most important areas to keep warm are your head and your feet – so warm socks are smart to pack, too!

Alepo Womens Winter Beanie Hat, Warm Fleece Lined Knitted Soft Ski Cuff Cap with Pom Pom

👉 Pants: you’re most likely not going to pull out the shorts, so it’s good to bring jeans and even lighter-weight pants – just bring a pair of leggings or thermal underwear for if it gets unexpectedly cold, to add as a layer!

👉 Umbrella: It’s always good to bring an umbrella, though it can get windy + rainy – I’ve had my umbrella turn inside-out before in NYC!

I suggest bringing a packable one that doesn’t take up too much space so it can be easily put into a bag if it becomes unusable. It also needs to be windproof, like this one:

SY COMPACT Travel Umbrella Windproof Automatic Umbrellas-Factory Outlet umbrella

👉 Sunscreen: The sun is still out in New York in all seasons, and sunscreen is still important – especially if you’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors! I use Badger sunscreen because it only has four ingredients and is safe for sensitive skin!

Badger Mineral Sunscreen Cream SPF 30, All Natural Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide, 98% Organic Ingredients, Reef Safe, Broad Spectrum, Water Resistant, Unscented, 2.9 fl oz

Fall In New York: FAQs

👉 What month is fall in New York?

Fall in New York officially begins with the autumnal equinox in late September and continues until the start of winter in December.

👉 When should I go to New York for fall colors?

The peak of fall foliage, when the leaves change to vibrant colors, usually occurs during October in most parts of the state. However, the timing can vary slightly from region to region within New York State.

👉 Is October good time to visit New York?

Yes, October is generally considered a great time to visit New York! Reasons include:

  • October is when the fall foliage in New York is typically at its peak, but usually mid-late October (depends on the year and part of NY you’re visiting)!
  • October in New York usually means milder weather. It’s not too hot or too cold, making it comfortable for outdoor activities, sightseeing, and exploring the city.
  • While October is still a popular tourist month, it tends to be less crowded than the peak summer months. This means shorter lines at attractions and a more relaxed atmosphere.
  • New York City and the surrounding areas often host a variety of festivals and events in October, from food festivals to Halloween-themed activities.

The only possible downsides to October in New York include occasional rain and cooler evenings, so it’s a good idea to pack layers and be prepared for changing weather conditions.

Additionally, hotel rates and airfare can still be relatively high, so booking in advance is advisable.

👉 What is the most beautiful month to visit New York?

Determining the “most beautiful” month to visit New York can be subjective and depends on your preferences for weather and scenery. Many visitors find that the most beautiful month to experience New York’s natural beauty, particularly its fall foliage, is typically October. Spring is also one of the most beautiful times to visit, between April and May, for greenery, flowers and milder weather.

👉 Is New York Christmassy in October?

New York City typically does not have a “Christmassy” atmosphere in October. The Christmas season in New York City generally begins later in November, after Thanksgiving, and continues through December.

👉 Why is New York so expensive in October?

New York City can be relatively expensive in October for the following reasons:

  • Peak Tourist Season: October is a popular time for tourists to visit NYC because of the pleasant fall weather and peak of the fall foliage season. The higher demand for accommodations, dining, and entertainment during this time can lead to higher prices.
  • Events and Festivals: New York City hosts numerous events and festivals in October, including food festivals, cultural events, and Halloween-themed activities. These events can attract visitors from both within and outside the city, contributing to increased demand and potentially higher prices.
  • Back-to-School Season: October is also a time when colleges and universities in the city are in full swing. This can lead to a demand for accommodations as visiting families, prospective students, and alumni come to the city.
  • Hotel Rates: Hotel rates in New York City can be affected by supply and demand. With the high demand for accommodations in October, hotels may increase their rates accordingly.
  • Cruise Season: October is a popular month for cruise ships to visit New York City, leading to an influx of cruise passengers who may stay in the city before or after their cruise. This can increase the demand for hotels and other services.

To mitigate the costs, book accommodations well in advance, look for deals and discounts, and plann activities and dining options strategically. Exploring free or low-cost attractions and taking advantage of public transportation can help manage expenses during your visit.

👉 Is New York rainy in October?

New York City experiences a moderate amount of rainfall in October, but it’s not typically considered a very rainy month. The amount of rainfall can vary from year to year, but here are some general patterns:

  • Rainfall Amount: On average, NYC gets about 3.5in (89mm) of precipitation in October. This can include rain showers, drizzle, and occasionally heavier rain.
  • Number of Rainy Days: October typically sees an average of 8-10 rainy days.
  • Varying Intensity: Rainfall in October tends to be scattered and not continuous. You might experience brief showers or periods of drizzle, but extended heavy rainfall is less common.
  • Temperature: The temperatures in October are generally mild, with highs ranging from the upper 50s to mid-60s Fahrenheit (15-20°C), and lows in the 40s and 50s Fahrenheit (8-15°C). It’s not too cold, so rain showers are usually not accompanied by freezing conditions.
  • Seasonal Changes: As October progresses, the weather may become cooler, and there might be a transition toward more fall-like conditions, including occasional rainy and windy days.

It’s advisable to check the weather forecast closer to your travel dates for the most accurate information. It’s also a good idea to bring an umbrella and waterproof clothing just in case you encounter rain during your visit to New York City in October.

👉 How many days do you need in New York?

New York City Only (NYC): To fully explore, plan to spend at least 4-6 days in the city. This timeframe allows you to experience must-see attractions, delve into local culture, and even catch a Broadway show without feeling too rushed. It strikes a balance between covering the essentials and allowing for spontaneous discoveries.

Including Excursions to New York State: If you want to venture beyond NYC and explore the natural beauty of New York State, consider dedicating a minimum of 1-2 weeks to your trip. This allows for day trips or longer excursions to picturesque regions like the Hudson Valley, the Catskills, or the Finger Lakes. You can savor scenic drives, hike in state parks, sample regional cuisine, and experience the charming towns and cultural attractions that New York State has to offer, providing a more comprehensive New York experience.

👉 What should I wear to a Broadway show?

To attend a Broadway show, I recommend smart-casual attire such as slacks or a nice dress with comfortable, yet stylish, shoes. If you’re going to a matinee, you can wear more casual clothing. Honestly, anything goes at a Broadway show as long as its reasonable, but it depends on your preferences as far as feeling over- or under-dressed.

👉 Is NYC pretty in the fall?

Yes, New York City is exceptionally pretty in the fall, with its iconic landmarks and parks surrounded by vibrant foliage, making it a picturesque and charming time to visit.
