24 hours In London: Getting Around + Important Safety Tips

The best way to plan your 24 hours is to consider these things first!

Time of arrival & departure, and getting into the city

If you’re flying into London, you’ll need to know what to do, and how much time it takes, to get from the airport into the city. Check out this site for information on getting to London from Heathrow for an example!

👉 Flights: WayAway is a flight aggregator that helps you find the cheapest flights. Use the code MUKI-TRAVELS for 10% off WayAway Plus.

👉 London Airports: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Southend & City Airport (the “business airport”)

Get the City Pass for 24 hours in London

The London Pass is the best option for 24 hours – it includes unlimited attractions, and you get to choose the number of days you want it to last.

The London Pass will get you cheaper entry, with a digital QR code to attractions, which will save you time and money! There’s also a 90-day money-back guarantee.

Transportation Options: Walking

You can walk a lot throughout London, and exploring on foot is definitely part of the fun! So go ahead and walk, but also be prepared to take public transportation or a car when your feet get tired or if you’re running short on time!

London Street

Transportation Options: Bus/Tube/More

The Oyster Card works for public transportation of all kinds in London. Download the app before your trip and load some money on it – it’s pay as you go – and then you won’t find yourself spending precious time figuring it out when you’re there.

It’s also cheaper than other ways of paying, because there’s a cap on the amount you can pay each day! The Oyster Card includes:

  • Bus
  • Tube
  • Tram
  • DLR
  • London Overground
  • Most Elizabeth line
  • IFS Cloud Cable Car
  • Thames Clippers River Bus

👉 As for navigating London via the tube, bus and walking, download the TFL app here.

👉 Uber/Lyft: London has Uber that you can use 24/7, but they do not have Lyft. I recommend downloading the Uber app and putting in your info before your trip to save time in case you need to use it (like when staying out later than planned or if you plan on drinking at all)!

👉 Boat Tours: You’ll find a 24 Hour Hop-On Hop-Off River Cruise in this guide, which is a fun option if you want to see London from a different view!

👉 Rent a car in London: Discover Cars is a great tool to use to find the best deals if you’re driving in and/or out of London (I don’t recommend renting a car if you’re flying in and out).

Important safety tips

London is notorious for smartphone thieves stealing phones out of people’s hands. Here are my top tips for protecting yourself (& your phone):

Of course, as with any major city, London also has pickpockets around. I recommend blending in and walking around like you know where you are as my top tip!

Beyond that, make sure you hold onto your bags near the opening, and/or carry an antitheft daypack that will help you fit in, like this one where the pockets open in the back:

24 Hours In London: What to do when you arrive

Since you have 24 hours, you’ll want to store your luggage first so you don’t have to lug it around! Even with just a backpack, I got really tired of carrying it around all day.

Our tour guide Natalie was very engaging and shared information about London historical sites not in the movie, which was really cool! The ferry ride on the Thames was a nice break in the middle. The tour was interactive and being sorted into houses for a house cup was a nice touch! Of course the best house won #Slytherin. Would definitely recommend!”

24 Hours In London: Pubs

It’s now that in-between time of wanting to take in a bit more nightlife before winding down. The hotels listed earlier all have top-rated bars, too! They are:

What to Consider for 24 Hours in London

👉 Weather. The summers in London are partly cloudy and comfortable, while winters are very cold, windy and mostly cloudy. The best time to visit is late June through early September. London is notorious for rainy days, but there are actually around 200 dry days per year! You might want to bring a packable umbrella like this one and/or rain jacket like this one just to be prepared, though!

👉 Stay Hydrated. When you’re only in a place as exciting and adventure-filled as London for a short time (like 24 hours), it’s really easy to get so wrapped up in sightseeing that you forget to hydrate and eat! Bring a water bottle, electrolyte packets and some snacks to be prepared (when I was there, I never stopped for food – I think I maybe stopped once for water)!

👉 Plan time for traveling in-between sites. Always plan for traffic and mistakes, especially things like the tube taking longer than expected or missing it altogether and having to wait! You can find the timetables here (and download the app here).
