Is Gothenburg worth visiting? ABSOLUTELY! Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city, offers a unique blend of historic charm, breathtaking archipelagos, and a thriving cultural scene.

Dubbed “the World’s Most Sustainable Destination” by Conde Nast and often referred to as Sweden’s Seattle or the “Little London” of Scandnavia, Gothenburg (Göteborg) has a distinct character that sets it apart.

With its picturesque canals that also earn comparisons to Amsterdam, bike-friendly paths, world-class museums, charming streets, stunning islands, theme park and more, Gothenburg has something for everyone.

Is Gothenburg Worth Visiting? My experience + honest thoughts

I visited Gothenburg on my first ever solo trip abroad – I wasn’t trying to travel completely solo, because a friend lived there (who worked at Volvo, of course!). However, I ended up being on my own most of the trip (a lesson in why traveling solo without expectations of others is my favorite way to travel!).

This trip began with an excavation in Israel and a few solo days in Tel Aviv before heading to Copenhagen – which, in all honestly, I enjoyed much more than Gothenburg because of its sunnier weather (literally) and vibes (that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy Gothenburg, because I did)!

I also did a day trip with my friends’ family to Oslo, and tried to go to Stockholm for Midsommar, but ended up in Gothenburg at the historic Gunnebo House and Gardens for the festivities because there were no train tickets left! However, I definitely got a really authentic Midsommar experience in Gothenburg without as many tourists, which was amazing!

Overall I think Gothenburg is 100% worth visiting, but if you’re also going to Copenhagen, I recommend visiting Gothenburg first.

Gothenburg is called the Amsterdam of Sweden because of the canals, and it feels like you’re in in an International city without the crazy crowds of more popular places, which makes it a top off-the-beaten-path spot – not to mention how easy it is to get to the amazing archipelagos and other main Scandinavian cities worth visiting!

Is Gothenburg Worth Visiting? Pros + Cons

As you can see from my experience, there are pros and cons to visiting Gothenburg (but isn’t that true of anywhere you go, to some extent)? Here are the main ones I think you should be aware of when planning your trip:

Pros

✔️ Budget-friendly (compared to many of the more expensive cities in Scandinavia)

✔️ Green/eco-friendly (one of my favorite things about this part of the world!)

✔️ Gorgeous, easy-to-reach Archipelagos

✔️ Picturesque architecture and views, plus amazing outdoor and water-based activities

✔️ Museums that are definitely worth visiting (especially the viking ship!)

✔️ Amazing food and coffee

✔️ Less crowded: about half the population of Stockholm and less touristy (you can have a more authentic and laid-back experience here)!

Cons

✔️ Unpredictable weather with frequent rain and cloudy days (hence the comparisons to Seattle)

✔️ Quieter nightlife than other major European cities (but it’s not non-existent – read on to learn more)

✔️ Even though Gothenburg is affordable compared to big cities nearby, it’s still a more expensive location compared to European destinations

✔️ Public transportation is a bit more limited than bigger cities (but, speaking from experience, I was mostly happy with it)

It’s worth noting that the cons mentioned above are relatively minor and should not overshadow the overall positive experience of visiting Gothenburg, in my opinion. Keep reading for more details on all the things that make this city worth visiting!

Gothenburg is cheaper than Stockholm (over 10% cheaper), which will make your visit easier on your wallet – and makes it worth taking some time in your trip for this area! It’s also a smaller city in area, so you won’t be having to pay for cars to drive you around or spending as much time on public transportation.

I walked most of the time in Gothenburg, and was amazed how easy it was to walk most places. I also visited in the summer when it stays light out extra late, so I felt safe as a solo female traveler, too.

3. Is Gothenburg Worth Visiting? Yes, if you love going green

Gothenburg, Sweden, is a city that embodies the concept of “lagom” – finding the perfect balance between sustainability and enjoyment. Gothenburg stands out for its unwavering commitment to eco-friendly practices, including:

• Sustainable fashion and shopping
• Theme park designed with the environment in mind
• The impressive wind-powered Volvo factory, emblematic of Gothenburg’s dedication to renewable energy

While the city itself is a treasure trove of green spaces and cultural wonders, the city’s true hidden gems lie in its captivating archipelago, which consists of over 20 islands spread across the northern and southern archipelago!

You can easily catch a ferry or boat from Saltholmen, Lilla Varholmen, or Stenpiren to get to the islands. The ferries are well-connected and operate at regular intervals, too, so you don’t have to worry about reliability.

Some of the best islands to visit include:

• Asperö Island: Relax on the beach, soak in the sun, and capture charming cottages in picturesque surroundings.
• Brännö Island: Enjoy local cuisine at delightful restaurants, explore inviting swimming spots, and take a stroll to Galterö Island for nature walks.
• Vargö Island: Experience untouched nature in a pristine nature reserve, perfect for leisurely walks, refreshing swims, and fishing.
• Styrsö Island: The largest island in the archipelago with amenities like restaurants and shops, making it an excellent choice for winter visits.
• Island-Hopping Adventure: Hop on a ferry to Bränno Husvik, walk across the island, and catch a ferry back from Brännö Rödsten to Saltholmen for a memorable exploration experience.

To fully embrace the enchantment of the Gothenburg Archipelago, I highly recommend setting aside more than a day for exploration. The southern islands are best if you have less time – plus they’re all car-free!

Tip: To reach the Southern Archipelago, simply hop on Tram 11 from downtown Gothenburg and alight at the Saltholmen boat terminal, where a fleet of ferries awaits.

The northern islands are best if you have a car, since they take longer to reach (or you can use the bus system). Also, the northern islands are less crowded in the summer.

6. Is Gothenburg Worth Visiting? Yes, if you love food

Renowned for its exceptional seafood, Gothenburg offers many types of culinary delights that will satisfy any food enthusiast! Here are some must-visit places that showcase the city’s food scene:

Gothenburg Food Market Halls: Gothenburg has many food halls that make the city enjoyable! They are:

• Feskekörka, or Fish Church: The Fish Church is a nickname for the resemblance of this indoor fish market to a Neo-Gothic church! There’s a market as well as a restaurant with amazing seafood here. It’s also the oldest food hall in Gothenburg, built in 1874.

• Saluhallen Market Hall: Located in the city center, this market is also old – it’s been functional since 1889! It’s also called the Market Hall at Kungstorget and has been renovated more recently. It’s the biggest indoor market in Gothenburg with around 40 restaurants and shops!

• Market Hall Briggen and Kville Market Hall are two more food halls to visit, both smaller but still excellent!

Innovative Restaurants: Gothenburg’s restaurant scene has emerged as a culinary powerhouse, thanks to visionary chefs who prioritize sustainability and innovation. Some of the best include:

• Koka: This one has a Michelin star and photo-worthy Scandinavian design, plus amazing wine!
• Bhoga: This is another Michelin-starred eatery with farm-fresh ingredients.
• Tullhuset: This amazing seafood-only restaurant has been operating for 20 years! It’s located in the archipelago, Klåva Harbour on Hönö, and has a new tasting menu each month.
• Folk: This is a great spot for Swedish cuisine, and for pre-theater food and wine – it’s located in the theatre foyer at Folkteatern.
• Sjömagasinet: This is an amazing option for seaside dining with incredible harbor views, including the Älvsborgsbron bridge! They serve classic seafood and lunch is more budget-friendly.
• Långedrag värdshus: This is a great spot for pre-or post-ferry rides, because it’s located in Långedrag harbour. It’s another great spot for seaside eating with fabulous harbor views! They serve seafood and Swedish cuisine.

You can also find numerous neighborhood bistros, bakeries and more throughout the city. I recommend exploring and either trying ones you pass or asking locals for their favorite spots!

7. Is Gothenburg Worth Visiting? Yes, if you love coffee

Fika is a Swedish tradition with coffee, cinnamon rolls/pastries and socializing. It happens at multiple times of day from morning until evening, anywhere and with any group of people!

The one thing I’ll say that surprised me when visiting Gothenburg is that this will be breakfast for many people it seems, and they don’t seem to eat a full meal until dinner – so if you meet people for “breakfast” and you need more than a pastry to fill you up (personally, I have to eat protein), make sure to plan for that!

Here are some top places to go for Fika in Gothenburg:

• Start your day with a visit to da Matteo, a local favorite known for its exceptional specialty coffee and delectable pastries.

• Swing by Bar Centro for a taste of their signature espresso blends and innovative brewing methods.

• For a cozy and laid-back atmosphere, Café Husaren offers a charming setting to enjoy a cup of coffee along with their famous cinnamon buns!

Gothenburg’s rich history as a prominent trading and manufacturing center, coupled with its esteemed universities, has fostered an entrepreneurial spirit and deep appreciation for arts and culture.

Here are some must-visit institutions and hidden gems that will enrich your Gothenburg experience:

• Röhsska Museum: This museum showcases design and fashion from (mostly) Sweden and Europe, including around 50,000 pieces and Greek and Roman antiquities, plus objects from Japan and and China.

• Gothenburg Museum of Art: This museum has one of the best art collections in Northern Europe and is a must-see for art lovers! There are works by Rembrandt, Picasso and van Gogh as well as contemporary art and more.

One of the best parts is Äskekärrsskeppet, the only exhibited Viking ship in the country! The museum also features a Children’s Museum and playroom, making it a family-friendly destination.

• Maritime Museum and Aquarium: Explore the maritime cultural history of Sweden at the Maritime Museum and Aquarium (I loved visiting this one!). Admire a wide range of model ships from different eras, and delve into the captivating stories of seafaring adventures!

• Skansen Kronan fortification: This fortification was one of two built in the early days of Gothenburg on its two hills to protect against Danish attack. Today it functions as a private event venue, but you can get amazing views from here and photos of the fortress!

• Skansen Lejonet: This is the twin fortification to Skansen Kronan, built on the opposite hill. It is also currently functioning as a private wedding venue, but you can take photos of it and the views!

• The Garden Society of Gothenburg (Trädgårdsföreningen): Trädgårdsföreningen is a sprawling park located across from Gothenburg’s central train station. It’s one of the best preserved 19th century parks in Europe, and has a rose garden, the impressive Palm House (Palmhuset) greenhouse, and food/cafes (Rosencaféet, Café Grindstugan and Trädgår`n)!

• Street Art: Gothenburg’s street art scene is really fun and well worth seeing and photographing! While some notable works can be found in the city center, venture further afield to discover extraordinary murals created during events like the Artscape festival. You can also find works by renowned national and international artists, including RONE and Yash.

• Poseidon Statue at Götaplatsen: The Poseidon Statue stands tall at Götaplatsen public square, serving as an iconic cultural symbol and landmark in Gothenburg.
