This is the backpack I wish I had brought on past travels when I didn’t know it existed – it could’ve saved me really annoying times dragging my rolling suitcase across cobblestone streets in Italy, down to underground stations and onto trains, and much more!

“As a digital nomad who needs to have all of her work and life with her while traveling the world it is essential to have a carry on that caters to that lifestyle.
This backpack has been a complete game-changer compared to my $30 target roller bag that kept breaking on me and large floppy purse which was not at all secure for my laptop and other tech.
I don’t think I have seen a more organized and practical carry on for the frequent traveler / digital nomad. There are pockets for EVERYTHING.
The felt laptop compartment paired with the waterproof lining keeps my laptop safe and secure while country hopping.
10/10 would recommend to anyone looking into purchasing this bag!”

“I’ve been backpacking for the last 11 years, and this is the best carry on I’ve ever used. Easy to pack, tons of storage space/pockets, easy to maneuver through TSA, fits easily in the overhead bin on planes, and can easily double as a day pack or in place of a hiking bag once you get to your final destination. I just got back from flying to Peru for 11 days using only this bag – used it to pack all my stuff, then as a day pack around Cusco while exploring and working remotely, then on a 4 day trek to Machu Picchu through the Andes! Honestly could not recommend more!”

“I don’t write a ton of reviews, but this warranted my time to do so in hopes that it helps someone out there make a decision on whether or not to buy this backpack. My wife and I are in our early 50’s and are looking for ways to pack for short trips via Spirit, Frontier, Avelo, Allegiant, etc. We travel out of Orlando, so we have a ton of low cost carrier choices. However, they’re only low cost if you don’t need to pay for luggage! I searched, and read dozens of reviews on all types of “personal item” backpacks and travel bags. I have bought and returned my fair share. Most were returned bc the quality was terrible, or the useable space to pack my clothes wasn’t the most efficient and felt it wouldn’t pass the strict guidelines of a Frontier. I am 6’2″, 200+lbs so my clothes are not small. When I looked at the videos reviewing this bag, I though it was exactly what we were looking for, but you never know until you actually get it and pack it.
Well, I bought 2 of them (28L) for me and my wife because we had a 3 day trip planned for Ohio via Avelo Airlines. When I put all of my clothes out and looked at the backpack, I thought there was no way it would fit in the bag, let alone fit as a personal carryon. I was wrong, it all fit with a little room to spare. For reference, I packed: (4) T-shirts; (4) pairs of socks; (4) underwear; (2) sleeping shorts; (3) Pairs of shorts; (1) Pair Lightweight Under Armor Athletic pants; (1) Pair of house shoes to use in hotel; (1) iPad Mini; (1) Sony over ear headphones; (1) Purevave Compact Toiletry Bag bought on Amazon; (1) All electronic cables for charging phone, etc.; (1) Small travel blanket that packs in a small pouch; and (1) Iphone 14Pro Max. And on top of that, we put reusable water bottles in the outside side pocket. To say I was amazed is an understatement. I’m not really sure how it all works, but the backpack form and the compartments, just seem to work as planned. With all of this packed inside the backpack, it still fit under the seat. The quality seems to be really good, and the water resistant material seems to be a great added value.
If I had to complain about anything, It would be possibly adding a hip belt to take some of the weight off the shoulders. Because it can hold so much, it can get a little heavy. I hope this helps anyone trying to find a bag like this. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase this again. Happy travels!”

๐ Check out this 5-star review from Soona R (Verified Purchase):
“I got this for my month Euro trip. Since people say don’t bring wheel luggage I thought this would be a good carry on and it was!!!
So, after a month with it this is what I really loved:
– The padded straps are great for not hurting you if you walk long distance or carry it for a long waiting time.
– You can hide the straps which make it easier to store in a (hostel) locker or in the plane upper compartment
– It has a strap so you can hold it if you have a wheel luggage which I didn’t try this time, but maybe in the future
– Material is strong and sturdy
– It’s very space, because it fitted everything I needed and I didn’t have to use the expansion it offers (2 pairs of shoes, 2 medium compression bags, 1 small compression bag… will look for photos to upload)
– Love the design and way it opens so I can look for my stuff and also makes it easier to organize/pack
– The color is beautiful and makes it easy to stand out.
I recommend this backpack if you don’t want something to big, just the right size and space to travel.
Side note… I used this as a carry on bag (had another bag as a personal item) and never had an issue on all my flights (Air transat, Ryanair, Austrian airlines, Westjet, Iberia, Easyjet, ITA airways, Ryanair)

“I have had this backpack for 3 months now. I travel for work a lot and have traveled with this backpack 8 times now. 3 week long trips and 5 of the 3 day variety. I use this backpack a long with the Osprey Daylite Plus. Macbook Pro 13 inch Laptop and iPad go into the Daylite plus along with normal work use items. A weeks worth of clothes and a pair of shoes go into the Osprey 40L. The Daylite plus attaches to the 40L and are easy to carry as a backpack when going into the airport. Right before I get onto the plane I detach the Daylight plus and the 40 L goes into the overhead and the Daylight plus under the seat, which gives me access to anything I may want to use during the flight. I am 6’2″ 250 lb and the Daylight Plus is small enough that I can put my feet on either side of it and not feel cramped like with a larger backpack.”

“I recently returned from a 12-day trip to Alaska. I knew packing everything in my large suitcase would be a challenge (keeping it under 50 lbs per airline regulations). So I needed a carryon which I could comfortably wear on my back, but get a lot in it. This bag really held a lot of stuff – my laptop, meds, rain jacket, make-up, some clothes. It was actually too heavy and my husband ended up carrying it much of the time as we had two flight connections. Next time I’ll go lighter. But the bag was strong and sturdy, it held up. I got a pink one which was super cute, but I would not recommend it – one trip and it already has black marks on it. Get a darker color. And I loved the bags that came with it, I used every one in my large suitcase, and one in the bag. This was a good purchase!”

“The Amazon Basics Carry-On Travel Backpack in Navy Blue is everything I was looking for in a travel bag and more. Right out of the box, its beautiful navy blue color caught my eye, and the quality was immediately apparent.

๐ Check out this 5-star review from lacey_does:
“You need these for 2 reasons – – (1) for packing as much as you can into a space and (2) staying organized. I can get about 10 dresses in one large packing cube which is major. I pack the smaller cubes vertically in my 40L Tortuga travel backpack and it allows for even more space. I sometimes even pack outfits inside gallon zip locks and then place them in each cube and only pull out what I need each day of travel. SUPER organized, but always maximizes my wardrobe and keeps everything smelling fresh.”
Tortuga Insulated Travel Water Bottle

I keep my chargers, memory card case, extra 35 mm film, adapters and even my sturdy little point and shoot camera has space in here. I like that the pouch has other compartments too so that everything isnโt just thrown into one main compartment. When Iโm in the airplane I donโt need to keep getting up to go into my bag for something, if I get up, I only need to once, because I know that everything is in here.”

“They are 3 of them and I like how they keep me even more organized during my trips. The bigger one for example I use to put toiletries so that when I need to use the restroom in the airport or in my hostel, I just grab one bag and thatโs it. Iโve used it during TSA checks with no problem, itโs easy to take it out of my backpack and put it in the bin for scanning of my little toiletry liquids. “This is possibly the best bag I’ve ever owned. For context, I’m someone who owns bags for style; practicality is a bonus. I own a LOT of bags, primarily all Italian designers. I purchased this bag to use it in place of a purse while traveling in June of 2022, knowing it would be handy for hiking and days when you end up doing a million things without a break. When it first arrived, like many other reviews have said – it’s large. It took me a few days to get used to the idea of it. It’s not huge, but larger than any fanny pack I’d seen.
And this I will say… I brought it on vacation and fell in love with it. It is INCREDIBLY practical, from the numerous storage pockets, slips, zips, you name it – to the way it wears. (Ironically the only other person I have ever seen wearing one of these bags was while I was pn that vacation!) I generally wear it with the pack on my back or chest, with a tighter fit around my shoulder and under my arm (like how you’d wear a crossbody). You won’t get shoulder aches from carrying it. You don’t have to worry about it opening. It will hold everything you need it to, in an organized place. You can run a mile without being bothered by its presence. Your stuff will never get wet. It’s even got a padded zip area hidden in back to hold sunglasses or whatever else.
I haven’t stopped using this as my primary bag. Seasons have come and gone, I’d switch to another bag and after a few days I’d get annoyed and switch back to this one. It’s stylish in a sporty sort of way and the black goes with everything (even though the accent colors are a little annoying). I added a fur keychain to it and it looks a smidge better lol. I have been trying to find another bag to use that’s similar and haven’t yet.”
Tortuga Passport Pouch
This Tortuga Passport Pouch is great for keeping your Passport and any other documents you need easy access to in a secure, zipper pouch (I know I get frustrated with traditional Passport covers – because you have to remove it from the case, I just keep mine stashed in the case without actually securing it)!
๐ Check out this 5-star review from Oliver B. (Verified Purchase):s
“Perfect way to travel and protect your passport. I previously had a passport cover but that added unnecessary bulk when traveling and you must take it out of the case every time you need to show it. The pouch is very light weight and minimal. The zipper encloser also allows me to put little pieces of paper like luggage tabs and tickets with my passport for safe keeping. Also, if you’re traveling with family and you’re the one in charge of all the passports it easily fits up to 4 passports. Overall, a minimalist pouch that does what itโs supposed to.”

Best Travel Backpacks That Open Like Suitcases: How To Pack To Fit The Most
Packing light in a travel backpack that replaces a suitcase can be a challenge, but it doesn’t have to be if you know what you’re doing!
Here is a step-by-step method to utilizing packing cubes to pack your backpack efficiently and to make flying and traversing airports easier:
Materials you’ll need:
- Travel backpack that opens like a suitcase
- Packing cubes (various sizes)
- Travel clothing and essentials
๐ Tip for clothing needs: This is really simple, but I spent years making the mistakes I hear a lot of people make – until last year, when I finally decided – for real – not to bring anything I wasn’t absolutely certain I would wear. Then, I only allowed myself a set number of outfits and shoes. I had extra room in my luggage for a trip of over a month with different clothing needs for each location, which has never happened to me before!
Step 1: Choose the right backpack:
- Go back and read through these options, which are my top 5 travel backpacks that open like a suitcase! Make sure to choose the size you need for your trip length and packing style/needs.
Step 2: Select your packing cubes:
- Use packing cubes in various sizes, like these packing cubes made by Tortuga, to categorize and compress your belongings effectively. Choose cubes that fit well inside your backpack.
Step 3: Organize your clothing:
- Lay out all the clothing you plan to bring on your trip.
- Sort them into categories (e.g., tops, bottoms, underwear, accessories).
- Roll or fold your clothes neatly to minimize wrinkles.
Step 4: Use packing cubes:
- Start by packing the items you won’t need until later in larger cubes, such as jackets or extra layers.
- Use smaller cubes for daily essentials like underwear, socks, and t-shirts.
- Consider using a compression cube for bulkier items like sweaters.
- Use clear or mesh-sided cubes to easily identify the contents.
Step 5: Maximize space and organization:
- Place the packing cubes inside your backpack, starting with the larger cubes at the bottom.
- Use the smaller cubes to fill gaps and spaces, ensuring a snug fit.
- Place items you’ll need quick access to in the outer pockets of your backpack.
Step 6: Toiletries and accessories:
- Use a Compact Toiletry Travel Bag, like this one, Use a toiletry bag or pouch to keep your toiletries and grooming essentials organized and separate from your clothing.
- Pack electronics and accessories in a separate pouch or pocket, like this Tortuga Tech Organizer.
Step 7: Shoes and other items:
- Place shoes in dedicated shoe bags or plastic bags to keep them from dirtying your clothing.
- If you have any non-clothing items, like books or documents, place them in a thin laptop sleeve or folder to protect them.
Step 8: Final check:
- Zip up all compartments and pockets, making sure everything is secure.
- Double-check for any essential items you might have forgotten.
Step 9: Wear bulky items:
- If you have any bulky clothing, like a jacket or hiking boots, wear them while traveling to save space in your backpack.
Step 10: Enjoy your trip!
- With your small backpack efficiently packed, you’re ready to travel light and enjoy your trip without the burden of excess luggage!
Best Travel Backpacks That Open Like Suitcases: FAQs
๐ Can I bring a backpack instead of a suitcase on a plane?
Yes, you can generally bring a backpack as a carry-on item on a plane, in addition to your personal item like a purse or laptop bag, depending on the airline’s specific size and weight restrictions for carry-on baggage. However, larger backpacks may need to be checked as a regular suitcase if they exceed the airline’s carry-on size limits.
๐ Is a suitcase or backpack better for traveling?
The choice between a suitcase and a backpack for traveling depends on your personal preferences and the nature of your trip. Suitcases are generally better for urban or resort-based travel with smooth surfaces, while backpacks are more versatile and suitable for adventures, outdoor activities, and navigating uneven terrain.
๐ What is the best travel backpack for flying?
The best travel backpack for flying depends on both personal factors: like if you’re bringing additional luggage, how much you ned to pack in your backpack and your personal style, and practical factors: like comfort, durability, weatherproofing, pockets and more.
If you’re looking for a backpack to use instead of a suitcase, I recommend a backpack that opens like a suitcase to make for easy packing. You’ll need to choose one that has the amount of space (volume) you need for your trip length (you can find sizes from 28-50L). I recommend the Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L, The Tortuga Weekender Backpack 30L or the The Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Pack – Del Dia as my top choices!
๐ Why don’t backpackers use suitcases?
Backpackers typically prefer backpacks over suitcases because backpacks are more versatile and practical for various types of travel. They allow for easier mobility, especially in locations with uneven terrain or no paved paths, and they provide a more compact and lightweight way to carry essentials while exploring.
๐ Can I fly with just a backpack?
Yes, you can fly with just a backpack as your carry-on luggage, provided it meets the airline’s size and weight restrictions for carry-on items. However, for longer trips or if you need to bring more items, you might need to check an additional bag or suitcase.
๐ How big of a backpack can I bring on a plane as a personal item?
The size limit for a personal item on a plane can vary by airline, but it typically falls within the range of 16 x 14 x 12 inches (40 x 35 x 30 cm) or similar dimensions. It’s essential to check your airline’s specific guidelines, as some may have stricter or more lenient requirements.
๐ What can I use instead of a suitcase?
You can use a travel backpack that opens like a suitcase as an alternative to a traditional suitcase. These backpacks offer the convenience of easy access and organization while maintaining the mobility and versatility of a backpack, making them suitable for a variety of travel styles.
๐ Is it cheaper to take carry-on or suitcase?
Whether it’s cheaper to take a carry-on or a suitcase can depend on the airline’s baggage policies, your packing habits, and the length of your trip.
Many airlines allow a free carry-on but may charge for checked suitcases, so it’s essential to check the specific airline’s fees and baggage allowances to determine which option is more cost-effective for your needs.
In addition, check with the airline’s liquid specifications for carry-on bags. My first solo trip abroad, to multiple countries, included budget airlines. By the time I returned home I had no liquids left – everything had been thrown away in security lines! Plus, the budget airlines said I’d be fine with my carry-on but always ended up making me pay to check the bag at the gate, which added up.
๐ Should I buy a travel backpack?
Buying a travel backpack, especially one that opens like a suitcase, can be a great investment for travelers who value mobility, versatility, and organization. These backpacks provide the convenience of easy access to your belongings while offering the benefits of a traditional backpack, like hands-free carrying and adaptability to various travel situations.
They are particularly useful for those who prefer packing light and exploring different destinations with ease. However, your choice depends on your travel style and preferences, so consider factors like your typical trip duration, destinations, and packing habits before deciding whether a travel backpack is right for you.
๐ What does TSA approved backpack mean?
A TSA-approved backpack is one that is designed to comply with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) guidelines for easier and quicker security screening at airports.
These backpacks often have a designated laptop compartment that can be opened separately for X-ray screening, allowing you to keep your laptop inside the bag during security checks.
Additionally, they may have clear pockets or compartments for toiletries, making it convenient to pass through security without removing these items.
However, it’s important to note that TSA agents have the final say on whether you need to remove your laptop or other items from the bag, so there’s no guarantee that you won’t be asked to do so.
๐ What size backpack fits under most airline seats?
A backpack that fits under most airline seats typically has dimensions of approximately 16 x 14 x 12 inches (40 x 35 x 30 cm) or smaller. However, it’s important to note that the specific size requirements can vary by airline, so it’s best to check your airline’s guidelines to ensure your backpack complies with their restrictions.
๐ What backpacks are not allowed on planes?
Oversized backpacks that exceed the airline’s carry-on size restrictions for both personal items and standard carry-ons may not be allowed in the cabin and may need to be checked. It’s crucial to review the airline’s specific rules and regulations regarding baggage to avoid any issues at the airport.
Additionally, backpacks that may not be allowed on planes typically include those containing prohibited items such as weapons, explosives, flammable materials, or other dangerous objects.
๐ How many pounds do backpackers carry?
The weight that backpackers carry can vary widely depending on factors like the length of trip, packing style, and type of adventure. However, as a general guideline, many backpackers aim to keep their loaded backpack weight at around 20-30% of their body weight. For a person weighing 150 pounds, this would translate to 30-45 pounds (13.6-20.4 kilograms) of backpack weight.
๐ Can I use a bag instead of suitcase?
Yes, you can use a bag instead of a suitcase for your travels, and a travel backpack that opens like a suitcase can be an excellent choice. These backpacks offer the convenience of suitcase-style packing while maintaining the flexibility and mobility of a traditional backpack. They are particularly useful for various types of travel, including city exploration, outdoor adventures, and backpacking trips, offering versatility and organization options that can make your journey more comfortable and efficient.
๐ Can I put clothes in my carry-on backpack?
Yes, you can definitely put clothes in your carry-on backpack. In fact, using a carry-on backpack that opens like a suitcase makes packing clothes more accessible and organized. Pairing it with packing cubes can further enhance your packing experience by allowing you to compartmentalize and compress your clothing, making it easier to locate items and maximize the use of space in your backpack. This combination is particularly advantageous for travelers looking to efficiently pack and access their essentials during their journey.
๐ What is the 3 1 1 rule?
The 3-1-1 rule is a security guideline established by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in the United States for carrying liquids, gels, and aerosols in your carry-on luggage when flying:
- 3: You can carry containers of liquids, gels, or aerosols in your carry-on bag, but each container must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less in volume.
- 1: All your 3.4-ounce containers must fit into a single, quart-sized, clear, resealable plastic bag.
- 1: Each passenger is allowed only one such quart-sized bag, which must be presented separately for screening at the security checkpoint.
This rule helps streamline the security screening process and reduces the potential for carrying hazardous materials on board. If you have larger quantities of liquids or need to carry larger containers, they should be placed in your checked luggage instead of your carry-on. Be sure to check the specific regulations of the airline and airport you’re traveling through, as rules may vary in different countries.
๐ Can you have clothes in your backpack and a carry-on?
Yes, you can have clothes in both your backpack and your carry-on when traveling by plane. Your carry-on typically refers to a small suitcase or a travel bag (including a bigger backpack), which you can use to pack clothes and other essentials, while a small backpack can be used as your personal item to carry additional clothing or items. However, ensure that your backpack complies with the airline’s size and weight restrictions for personal items and that your carry-on adheres to their rules for carry-on baggage.
๐ How do I know if my backpack will fit under my plane seat?
To know if your backpack will fit under your plane seat, check the airline’s specific dimensions for under-seat storage, which can vary. Measure your backpack to ensure it fits within these dimensions when packed and flattened as needed.
๐ Will an 18 inch backpack fit under airplane seat?
In most cases, an 18-inch backpack should fit under an airplane seat, as the typical dimensions of under-seat storage on planes allow for items of that size. However, it’s essential to consider the specific airline and aircraft you’ll be flying on, as seat pocket dimensions can vary slightly.
